Organ donation may be one of the last frontiers in DD healthcare. The issue of even discussing organ donation to parents, conservators, families and patients in the DD arena is highly charged and sensitive. The fear of devaluing the lives of people with disabilities, exploitation, the ghosts of the past (wholesale pulling of teeth, involuntary sterilization, eugenics etc), and a general discomfort in talking about end of life issues contribute to denying this "life providing" gift to families and individuals.
